An Open letter to the Hon. Minister of Education.

An Open letter to the Hon. Minister of Education.
Dear Madam Hon. Minister,
Re: Children with neurodivergent minds are different, and not disabled
I congratulate you and your team at the ministry for successfully releasing the 2024 PLE results.
As schools, parents and pupils are celebrating 4, 5, 6โฆ for us we are not celebrating a first grade, not even a second grade but we are celebrating a third grade, yes you read well, we are celebrating a third grade and not one can stand in our way of the celebrations.
Even if we chose to take the celebrations to the capital of Kenya, not even the well trained boys of your son the CDF can repatriate us to Kla๐.
Below is the reason as to why.
This time last year we weren’t sure if we would sit for P7 after being rejected by a school we so much loved (I chose this school for my future kids when I was myself in P7 ๐). A school where my pupil had spent 7 years (including the COVID year) only to be told that they can’t register him because of poor performance.
Hon. Madam Minister I am talking about a monster ๐ called Dyslexia
As parents of a dyslexic child the journey has been tough. Before we got to know this reality, how could one explain a child who can’t read or write well๐ค and our pupil was often made feel inadequate by those around him and we had to always be protective of him.
I am really not sure of how much material I have read about Dyslexia but one thing I am sure of is that I must be at PhD level ๐
As it’s said when one door closes, another opens, and indeed God opened up a wider door that led us to a school that has nurtured us and given us a new definition of learning.
At this school we have rediscovered ourselves (both parents and pupil) and we thank you MIS for 360^ยฐ turnaround you have made in our pupil.
You kept us hopeful where all seemed hopeless ๐ and today we celebrate passing in grade 3.
Fellow parents and guardians, before you haul insults at your child and your selves and screaming for a DNA test, first screen your selves for a Dyslexia test.
Dyslexia is real and most of us have refused to accept this fact.
The rejection led us to Mukono Integrated Schools where Dr. Njuki Eria Paul and his team are rewriting the meaning and means of educating a child. It should be such people like Dr. Njuki sitting on the Education committees to formulate policies and strategies and in boardrooms speaking the right English๐
Hon. Madam Minister we need more of such schools which should be set up as centers of excellence to support children that think differently.
It is such children that turn into great innovators, great sports men and women and excellent business persons.
We shall be continuing our studies at MIS and we hope to see you Madam Hon. Minister visit us one day ๐
May God bless MIS๐๐
